The former queen of Twitch, Pokimane, turned 28 and received an extraordinary gift for her birthday: a bouquet of flowers made from dollar bills. But when she boldly presented this bouquet on TikTok, she found herself in the crosshairs of a current movement: Blockout 2024.
This is Pokimane:
Pokimane lacks tact when posting on social media
This was her performance: On May 14, Pokimane received a gift for her 28th birthday: a bouquet of dollar bills.
The streamer showed this in a TikTok video:
This was the criticism: The video received a lot of likes, but also some negative comments. Users criticize that the streamer is showing off her money here.
It says something like:
Streamer finds herself in the crosshairs of Blockout 2024
This was the serious criticism: There is currently a movement on social media in the USA, “Blockout 2024”, that wants to cancel celebrities who are very rich but have not commented on the conflict in Israel.
It’s about the suffering in the Gaza Strip, which affects many people around the world.
The movement arose on May 6th at a gala: The Met Gala is considered a gala for the rich and beautiful, where celebrities flaunt their wealth. Therefore, the gala has been criticized for years and especially in 2024, precisely because of the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
A social media post from influencer Hailey Kalil appeared at the event in which she said “Let them eat cake” (via CNN).
This is a historical reference to Marie Antoinette and has been used for centuries as an example of a rich, privileged person who is deaf and blind to the poverty and misery of the world. The phrase is often credited with triggering the French Revolution, although historians have doubts that the phrase was said that way.
This post was the last straw and triggered Blackout 2024: The movement calls for the accounts of celebrities who remain silent about the situation in the Gaza Strip to be blocked.
A number of celebrities have made the list as examples of such “rich but blind celebrity,” including Gal Gadot, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart.
Now they also threatened to put Pokimane on this list.
Pokimane reiterates commitment to the Gaza Strip
This is how Pokimane reacted: The 28-year-old recognized the danger and said: She completely understands it. She hoped that her gesture with the bouquet would be clearly recognized as a joke.
She will now continue to support the “Palestine cause”, the Palestinians – with her words and her wallet. She promises that. She had already shared a call for donations on Twitter on May 11th (via twitter).
She obviously wanted to quickly jump off the list.
Pokimane is already a burnt child when it comes to money, because the streamer, who otherwise acts so sensitively and cautiously, now seems, in the eyes of her critics, to have the feeling that not everyone has as much money as she does: 27-year-olds are selling very expensive cookies on Twitch, is criticized for it: heats up the criticism with a new statement
