24 people, including several children, have been found dead in Boksburg near Johannesburg in South Africa after inhaling leaking gas. The accident is suspected to be linked to illegal mining activities in the area.

A spokesperson for the rescue service in Ekurhuleni speaks SABC News that they received a call shortly after 8 p.m. about what was first thought to be a gas explosion. Upon arrival found that it was in fact a leak from a gas cylinder in the illegal settlement.
