Twenty-four civilians have been killed and at least 62 others injured since gunmen stormed a village in southwestern Cameroon, the local mayor said on Tuesday.

The attack on the village, which is close to the border with Nigeria, occurred on Sunday, according to Mayor Ekwalle Martin.

The southwestern and northwestern regions of Cameroon are home to English speakers, who make up about one-fifth of the country’s 22 million inhabitants. For several years, that group has complained about perceived discrimination by the French-speaking majority.

Finally, the English-speaking declared independence on October 1, 2017, and launched attacks on security forces. The backlash was violent and so far the conflict has cost over 6,000 lives and forced around one million people to flee, according to The International Crisis Group.
