The MOBA League of Legends has been around since 2009 and millions of people play it every day: you would think that no move or trick is unknown. But the Dane Rasmus “Caps” Winther (23) came up with an idea that apparently no one had thought of before and that completely surprised his opponent. And he saved the trick for a decisive game at LoL Worlds 2023.
This was the situation:
Neeko can do something that no one expected: tank the tower
What kind of trick was that? Neeko’s passive trait, Inherent Glamor, allows Neeko to transform into a non-epic monster.
Caps transformed into a Cannon Minion, a siege minion, and was able to absorb 4 shots from the tower that would otherwise have killed either him or his jungler. Because shots from the tower are usually the mechanic that is intended to prevent such “tower dives” especially at the beginning of a match: If someone runs into the tower to kill an opponent, they usually die themselves.
Due to the additional time that Caps bought for his jungler by absorbing the shots, the jungler was able to take out the opposing midlaner largely without risk and get the coveted first blood.
As Dotesports explains, Caps was only able to absorb so many of the turret’s shots at this low level because the “cannon minion” he transformed into enjoys some special rules that allow him to take less damage from the turret. And apparently Neeko takes over these bonuses.
Apparently no one before Caps had come up with this brilliant idea of using Neeko in this form.
This is how it is discussed: As they say on reddit, the idea was so “crazy” that even opponent Yagao said after the match that he didn’t know about this feature and never expected it.
Others say that Caps’ action could lead to Neeko being banned later in the tournament because this trick will simply make her too strong and the best mid laners in the world all already play a strong Neeko, which will now become even stronger.
One also wonders whether Riot intentionally programmed this trick into the game but no one has discovered it to date, or whether even Riot was surprised by this innovative move.
Did it help Caps? No, so the match where Caps used the trick was won by G2. However, his team had to lose Game 3 and so the Worlds ended early for G2.
