Prisons and detention centers will be expanded by 220 new places during the next year. The government has granted the correctional service to rent additional premises in five locations where there are already operations.
The new detention and detention centers are to be rented in Gothenburg, Luleå, Nyköping, Umeå and Ystad, the government writes in a press release. The rental agreements are to be valid for nearly nine years.
In August, the National Board of Correctional Services requested SEK 700 million to, among other things, build four completely new institutions over the next three years. The new institutions would be located in Trelleborg, Kalmar, Norrköping and Värnamo.
The government writes in its press release that in the future it will come up with more decisions on the expansion of the facilities of the correctional service.
