While it was still unusual at the beginning of the history of the cinema that a film was continued, today it is rarity when a film can stand for itself and has to start a large franchise. The problem of this development is often that the original films fuel expectations to their sequels, which can often not be met.
The past 25 years have produced numerous such examples, but a certain sci-fi series is considered to be particularly punished by this phenomenon: matrix. While Part 1 was celebrated as a milestone of the cinema, the sequels of large parts of criticism and audience caused a bit of disappointment.
