In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the biggest series phenomena of all. The fantasy horror story about the vampire hunter Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her “Scooby Gang” had seven seasons and a spin-off. But will we ever return to this series world again?
After the development of a Buffy reboot was announced almost six years ago, things have been suspiciously quiet about the project recently. Now there is a sign of life again for the first time.
Fantasy return isn’t dead after all: The Buffy revival is still being planned
For the first time in the summer of 2018, there was a surprise announcement of a possible return to the Buffy universe, which would be led by showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen and would focus on a new vampire hunter. Two years later, however, growing controversy surrounding Buffy creator Joss Whedon put a huge damper on the planned reboot.
In August 2022, the fate of a new Buffy series seemed to be finally sealed. As IGN reports, producer Gail Berman revealed during an edition of TV’s Top 5 podcast that the project will be on indefinite hiatus. But as Buffy Summers taught us, death is never truly final.

After more than a year and a half of radio silence, there is hope again. And that comes from country singer Dolly Parton, who was involved in Buffy and the spin-off Angel – Hunters of the Dark through her production company Sandollar Television. In an interview with Business Insider, she surprised us with the promising statement:
This is still being worked on. They’re thinking about bringing it back and redesigning it.
The development of a new edition is far from being written off. However, there is currently no information about who is involved in the project and what form it would take. So it could be a few years before we see a new Buffy series.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to a Revival of a different kind be happy. Numerous stars from the fantasy series (although not Buffy personally) returned for the radio play last year Slayers: A Buffyverse back. The story follows the vampire Spike (James Marsters) 10 years after the end of the original.
