The historically severe drought continues in southern Africa. Among the countries in the region, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia have already declared a state of national emergency in the summer. Angola and Mozambique are also suffering from drought.
The food shortage will worsen at least until March-April of next year, when the next harvest is ready. Even that requires rains to succeed.
According to the UN food program WFP, there are 21 million malnourished children in the region alone. WFP estimates that it needs 335 million euros, but has only received a fifth of the amount.
