2024 US Election Dates Candidates and Electoral Votes

When is the 2024 US election?

The US presidential election 2024 takes place on November 5. Election Day always falls on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, which means that the American people always vote sometime between November 2nd and 8th.

Before 1845, it varied between the states of the United States when election day fell, but in 1845 a law was passed that said they would have a common election day. The fact that it happened at the beginning of November is due, according to Britannicathat many Americans at the time were farmers. In November, when the harvest was finished, the work load was less and it was therefore easier for large parts of the people to vote.

In addition to the presidential election, local and congressional elections are also held on the same day.

How often are there presidential elections in the United States?

In the USA is organized presidential election every four years. The last election, there Joe Biden was appointed the country’s 46th president, in other words took place in 2020.

Voter turnout in the US is not as high as in Sweden, for example, where 84.2 percent of all eligible voters voted in the 2022 parliamentary election. But voter turnout in the US in 2020 was the highest ever. Then just over 66 percent of all eligible voters went to the ballot box, according to Pew Research Center.

Bipartisan Policy Center states that approximately 244 million Americans are eligible to vote in 2024. If turnout is higher than in 2020, that would mean over 162 million Americans vote in the election.

Just anyone can’t be president of the states. To run for President of the United States, you must meet these criteria:

  • Be born a US citizen. However, you do not have to be born in the country.
  • Be at least 35 years old.
  • Have lived in the US for at least 14 years.
  • What is the “lame duck” period?

The time between the election and the presidential installation is called the “lame duck” period. During this period, which in the case of the 2024 US election thus extends from November 5 to January 20, 2025, the incumbent president usually has less political power due to the short time he has left in office.

The American presidential election is a so-called indirect election. In practice, this means that the citizens of the country’s 50 states vote for so-called electors, which are people who will represent them in the election of president when it is time for the electoral college to cast their votes.

How many electors a state has is determined based on the respective state’s population. This means that states with larger populations have more electors. California, which is the state with the largest population, thus has significantly more electors than a smaller state such as Utah or Kentucky.

The presidential candidate who receives the most votes in each state takes home all the electoral votes in that state. This is in accordance with the so-called “winner takes it all” principle. However, there are two exceptions: In Maine and Nebraska, electoral votes are distributed based on county and congressional districts. The electors in these states can thus vote for different candidates.

So what does it take to win? Well, in total there are 538 electors and to win the presidential election you need to get at least 270 electoral votes. Should none of the presidential candidates receive 270 electoral votes, the election moves on to the House of Representatives, where each state has one vote.

Can the candidate with the most votes lose the US presidential election?

Yes, the electoral system means that the presidential candidate who receives the most votes does not necessarily win the election. This happened in 2016 then Hillary Clintonwho received the most votes for the country as a whole, lost to Donald Trump.

The latter took home the victory in the most swing states, in English “swing states”, and thereby received 306 electoral votes against Clinton’s 232.
