Medals at the Olympic Games bring certain gains, more or less high depending on the country.
The Olympic Games do not offer a bonus to athletes, the IOC refuses to do so. On the other hand, many delegations decide to pay a bonus to those who obtain a medal. Gold, silver, or bronze, the bonuses vary. Obviously, the more precious the metal, the greater the gain.
For France, athletes will earn more in Paris than in Tokyo. The bonuses paid to French Olympic champions are increased from €65,000 to €80,000, while a silver medal will bring in €40,000 and €20,000 for bronze. Coaches are also affected since they will receive bonuses equivalent to those of their athletes, whereas their bonuses were only 50% until now.
By comparison, Singapore and Taiwan pay more than €650,000 for an Olympic title, while the United States Olympic Committee pays its Olympic champions “only” $37,500 (around €35,000). The United Kingdom does not give any bonus of its own, but an annual allowance of almost €34,000.
On the other hand, athletics has decided to launch a cash prize decided by World Athletics, which will pay $50,000 to Olympic champions in athletics. A decision that is controversial, particularly within the French National Olympic and Sports Committee.
