This year, the Football World Cup will not take place during the summer period. With the current autumn temperatures, an analysis firm has asked the question if by these autumn temperatures, will French supporters change their eating habits in front of the TV?
For the first time in its history, the Football World Cup will experience the end of the year for its organization. Hosted by Qatar, the competition will take place between November 20 and December 18, just days before the arrival of winter. and a week before Christmas. Usually, fans meet up with their friends in front of the television, in the fan zones or on the terrace of a bar between June and July.
Beyond the environmental and social issues presented by some viewers as arguments for not watching the matches – 19% of French people will probably not watch the World Cup. The reasons are many: waste of resources, working conditions of workers deemed deplorable on construction sites or lack of respect for human rights. However, a study conducted by the analyst firm NielsenIq raised the intentions of viewers during the Football World Cup, an event whose key word is conviviality.
It is a moment of sharing and pleasure embodied by consumption rituals. Even if we are accustomed to celebrating the magic of football in T-shirts and sunglasses, this autumn edition will not, a priori, prevent supporters from uncapping their beer packs and opening a packet of crisps.
Pizzas, aperitif biscuits… no, no raclette this year
According to Martin Vallet, consumer expert at NielsenIQ: “An event like this organized at the approach of winter should logically have a favorable impact on consumption at home, the low temperatures of the season limiting the desire of the French to go to friendly places in the outside of their home.
Contrary to what one might have thought, football fans will not take out the raclette machine in front of Les Bleus matches. Only 5% of respondents think of potentially organizing such an evening on this occasion.
On the supporters’ table, we will find products that are legion during a World Cup in the summer period. First non-alcoholic cold drinks, for 26% of supporters. But also aperitif biscuits for 25%, or even homemade dishes to share such as pizza, pies or quiche, according to 15% of those questioned and concerned.
In summer as in autumn, pizza remains a must-have for a football evening. If it is not homemade, it will be delivered by a restaurant, otherwise ordered to take away (19%) or bought in supermarkets (12%).
Beer, an essential in summer and winter
Strong symbol of football matches, which allows you to toast to victory (or to drown your sorrows after a defeat, but as a reminder, alcohol is to be consumed in moderation), beer will indeed be foaming at 14% of respondents. However, this does not mean that the culinary markers of the summer season will be popular: gazpacho will thus only be consumed by 5% of supporters. However, 11% of football fans will not say no to a little coffee or hot chocolate before a match.
However, if the autumn season will not have an influence on the “culinary” choices of the evenings of the World Cup, it will all the same have it on the choice of places of viewing. 93% of respondents who have planned to follow the World Cup will watch the matches at home, while only 10% intend to go to a bar or restaurant.
