  • 20,000 ninth graders without a high school qualification

    Of the 122,000 ninth-graders who left elementary school this spring, 20,000 lacked eligibility to continue studying at upper secondary school, according to new statistics from the Swedish National Agency for Education.

    This is an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year.

    – For many students, it is precisely a passing grade in mathematics that is missing in order to be eligible for upper secondary school. The school system needs to focus on teaching mathematics, says Anna Castberg at the Swedish National Agency for Education in a press release.

    Last year, Swedish municipalities paid over SEK 200 million to companies that run HVB homes and which, according to the police, have links to serious organized crime.   • Major rescue operation in terraced houses in Sandviken

  • Car overturned and caught fire

    A car overturned into a ditch and caught fire in a traffic accident in Kumla during the night towards Thursday.

    Police, ambulance and emergency services were alerted at 00:36. The accident occurred on the Östra leden which, according to the Swedish Transport Administration’s forecast, would be closed until 05, writes Nerikes Allehanda.

    According to the newspaper, it is unclear if anyone was in the car when the fire started.

    New York’s Democratic mayor Eric Adams is being indicted for suspected corruption, several US media reported.

    It is not yet clear what the criminal classification is and the prosecutor’s office in Manhattan does not want to make any comments.

    The police searched during the night towards Thursday for a man with a weapon in central Stockholm.

    At 01.47 the police ended the chase.

    A preliminary investigation into serious weapons crime has been launched.

    Donald Trump criticizes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

  • Iraq executed 21 prisoners

    Iraq executed at least 21 prisoners on Wednesday, most convicted of “terrorism” and being active in IS. This is stated by security sources for the news agency AFP.

    All the detainees were said to have been Iraqi nationals, and all but one were men.

    It is the largest mass execution to be reported from Iraq in many years.

    Last December, 13 prisoners were executed in what UN experts said was the largest mass execution in Iraq since 2020, when 20 prisoners were executed on the same day.

    Iraqi courts have handed down hundreds of death sentences and life sentences in recent years in cases where the accused were accused of “terrorism”.

  • High death toll when bus plunged into river

    About 30 people died when a bus in Ethiopia drove into a river in the Wolaita region.

    Local authorities confirmed the fatal accident on Wednesday evening, adding that around 20 people were seriously injured in the crash.

    The roof of the bus crumpled and then fell off in the accident, where the vehicle appears to have plunged down a long slope before ending up in the river.

    The remains of 42 people who fought against the apartheid regime in South Africa, and who died in exile in neighboring Zimbabwe and Zambia, were repatriated on Wednesday. Government representatives were present at Waterkloof airbase when the remains were taken to South Africa.

    The measure, and subsequent ceremonies, are part of the government’s efforts to try to create closure for the families and relatives of the dead. Many of those who fought for the armed liberation movements ANC and PAC took refuge in neighboring countries.

    The movements had military training camps in the countries, but several of those who sought asylum fled the persecution of the apartheid regime.

    On Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa of the ANC party is expected to host an official ceremony before the remains are buried.

    South Africa is negotiating to return remains with the governments of Lesotho, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Angola and Russia, among others.

  • Villa fire in Staffanstorp

    During the evening, a fire started in a carport in Staffanstorp municipality.

    The fire has since spread to a villa.

    Firefighters are on the scene to put out the fire.

  • Secret Service agent suspected of sexual assault – against Harris’ colleague

    A Secret Service agent is suspected of sexually assaulting one of Kamala Harris’ associates in the presidential election campaign, writes CNBC.

    The agent is accused of forcing himself on the woman in her hotel room after dining and drinking with her and several other campaign staffers during a work visit in Wisconsin.

    A Secret Service spokesperson told CNBC that it is “investigating an allegation of misconduct involving an employee.”

    The agent has been removed from duty pending the investigation.
