2 things could be the reason a new anime game is banned in a country

Anime fans can look forward to a new video game adaptation – just not in Australia. Because the title is banned there, even though it is even available for sale to under 18s in other countries.

What kind of video game is this? The first real fighting game for Hunter x Hunter is scheduled to appear next year. In Hunter x Hunter Nen x Impact, players can choose from a wide range of characters from the anime and compete with them in 3v3 tag team battles. The aim is to defeat the opponent using different punch combos.

The characters include protagonist Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck. In online mode, two players can duel each other. Alternatively, fights against CPU opponents are also possible. The title will be released for both Steam and PS5.

All in all, the anime title sounds like many other beat ’em ups that were created through anime. Other games like Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm are available in Australia and only require parental supervision for players under 15 years old. But Hunter x Hunter was completely blocked from sale.

Australia has a reputation for quickly banning video games

What is the reason for the ban? The Australia Classification Board (ACB) is responsible for granting clearance for video games. However, on their official website they have not given any reason why the Hunter x Hunter video game is not allowed to be sold in Australia.

What could be problematic? There could be two possible reasons for the denial:

  • Sexual acts on children under 18 could possibly be a reason. Some of the characters are under 18 and games like Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition have been banned for this in the past.
  • The trivialization of drugs could also be a reason. The drug D² is a theme in Hunter x Hunter. This is why other video games like Wasteland 3 were not originally released for sale.
  • However, this is just speculation. We probably won’t find out the real reasons anymore.

Why is Australia so strict? Australia has had strict guidelines to classify video games for several decades. In the past, numerous games such as Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number and Risen were banned. Other games like South Park: The Stick of Truth and The Witcher 2 were at least released after re-evaluation.

In contrast to Australia, the USK even releases Hunter x Hunter Nen x Impact in Germany for ages 12 and up. Here, stressful topics such as death, bullying and addiction as well as violence have led to age ratings.

The Hunter x Hunter manga still hasn’t finished. Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of the story, has already revealed how the manga will end. He’s already revealed the ending in case he dies unexpectedly: Author reveals the ending of the manga he’s been drawing for 25 years in case he dies
