2 pentakills decide the match

The League of Legends final took place in Europe yesterday, Sunday, April 14th. The two best teams in the LEC played against each other: G2 and Fnatic. Once again one player made the difference in LoL: the Dane Caps.

What kind of match was that? It was the “Grand Final” of the LEC 2024 Spring Playoffs. The game for the championship in Europe in the spring season:

  • On one side there was the perennial champion G2 with the German Broken Blade in the top lane and probably the best player in Europe, the Dane Caps, in the middle
  • Their opponent was Fnatic, who had recovered after years of stumbling. Compared to before – with Rekkles – Fnatic no longer has any big stars, perhaps most likely the Czech Humanoid in the midlane
  • A bombastic video for League of Legends now has 138 million views – shows how huge LoL is

This is how the match went: Fnatic scored a surprise in Match 1. The underdogs were able to surprise the favorites and win the match in their favor with an aggressive start.

Broken Blade collapsed completely on Sion and played 1-8-8. Jungler Yike looked similarly weak on Rek’Sai at 1-5-6. At Fnatic, however, botlaner Noah trumped Varus with 12-3-12. Supporter Jun dominated the game with 2 kills and a massive 27 assists

Match 2 was evenly matched, but after 29 minutes it went to G2 with 19-18 kills, which meant they were on the road to victory and never deviated from it. A Baron steal from jungler Yike and a pentakill from Caps with Azir decided the game.

Hans Sama introduces opponents in Match 4: “It borders on cyberbullying”

G2 won Match 3 and Match 4 in 27 minutes and 34 minutes. Mid laner Caps and bot laner Hans Sama turned up the heat here.

Caps won Match 3 with a backdoor play: That’s what it’s called when a player opts out of the team fight, secretly pushes a minion wave into the opponent’s base and wins the match.

Hans Sama got a pentakill on Jinx in Match 4, going 17-2-5.

How is this discussed? At G2, victory on reddit is clearly attributed to 2 people. For many, Caps is the dominant player in Europe who has proven his class over the years.

The other strong man, who is viewed more skeptically, is bot laner Hans Sama.

Although he is credited with having presented his opponent Noah in such a way that it looked like “cyberbullying”, it is doubtful whether he has the international class to compete against the Korean and Chinese superstars at the MSI.

3 comments sum up the mood well.

The general tenor is: Fnatic did their best in the match, showed heart and earned the respect, but individually and in team fights, G2 is a few classes better in this form.

What can you say about the game? G2 have now won their 4th European title in a row. But in recent years they have been far from the top internationally. Caps admits this openly and says he hopes to be able to make an international splash again in 2024.

Since Caps started playing in G2, they have won 10 championships while Fnatic have won none

Why is the rivalry between the two so special? Fnatic and G2 were the dominant teams in Europe for years:

  • By 2018, Fnatic had become champions 7 times
  • G2 won 4 championship titles.
  • In 2018, G2 convinced Caps to switch from Fnaitc to G2, but since then the duel has become relatively one-sided:

  • Since 2019, G2 has been champion 10 times
  • Fnatic not once
  • The real season begins for Caps and his boys now with the MSI. The opponents waiting for G2 are several times larger:
