There is a story from Poland with a curious happy ending. A player had two characters stolen in the MMORPG Metin 2 in a gray market transaction. But he didn’t let it go and went to the police – a short two and a half years later the district court got in touch with him.
This happened to the player: An MMORPG player named Filip offered two of his characters in the MORPG Metin 2 for sale in May 2020. He did that through the AllegroLoacal platform: it’s kind of like Poland’s eBay, an “e-commerce site” based in Poznan. He estimated the value of the characters at around €640.
The two characters went away in an auction, but the buyer didn’t pay. Ultimately, the two characters were stolen from him.
Pure nostalgia from 2005 – how good was the MMORPG Metin2?
Player goes to the police
The player did: For most people, the case would have ended by now and the characters would just have gone. This is a known risk in such gray market transactions.
The situation was also critical because the characters were not on an official GameForge Metin 2 server, but on a private server.
But as reported by a Facebook group and several Polish sites, Filip did not want to let the matter rest, but went to the police and described the incident. The police actually took on the case.
The private server couldn’t help him in his predicament because even on the private server they didn’t support the sale of accounts and could only block the accounts.
Thief must pay back money and do 300 hours of community service
This is how it went: After two and a half years, the news has now come that the police investigation is actually ending with a happy ending after a long time.
This is evidenced by a letter from the Kozalin District Court, Criminal Division II, which was shared on Facebook with names partially blacked out. The investigation into “unfavorable appropriation of property” took place on September 7th. The accused was found guilty under Article 286, Paragraph 1.
They caught the thief and sentenced them to do 30 hours of community service every month for 10 months – without pay. In addition, he has to pay the MMORPG player 2850 zloty in damages. That’s about €610.
