2 bosses sat sadly in front of the camera for 8 minutes, finally announcing a new, crazy mode

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The MOBA League of Legends has come under harsh criticism lately: the game has become boring, events are formulaic, the new cinematic is a disaster. 2 of the bosses of LoL admit: The criticism is right. In an 8-minute Twitter video, they explain the issues, announce a new game mode, and a pink future for LoL.

Who’s speaking? The local bosses are Executive Producer, Jeremey “Brightmoon” Lee, and Head of League Studio, Andrei “Meddler” van Roon.

In an almost 8-minute video on Twitter, the two sit quite contritely in front of the camera and pour buckets of ash over their heads.

Van Roon has a problem with the crisis: in 2022 there were many changes in the team, apparently too many. During the corona pandemic, numerous employees resigned, including in management. Van Roon only moved up in August 2022.

This video was a low point in LoL for many fans:

LoL Season 2023: The Cinematic “The Brink of Infinity”

2022 was a “reconstruction” year, you can tell that in LoL 2023

What problems do you admit? The two bosses admit that League of Legends is not doing well at the moment. Not only the catastrophic cinematic at the start of the season is a problem, the events have also become formulaic and lame over the years.

This is because the team was not in a good condition in 2022, you had to “rebuild”, fill many positions:

  • The good news: the team will be in a much better position in 2023.
  • The bad news: The current LoL still reflects the state of 2022
  • The criticism of the LoL events is that Riot only want to make money with them and they hardly offer any variety

For new games, staff was withdrawn from LoL

Where are these problems coming from? One criticism of Riot is that they have released so many new games over the past few years that LoL isn’t as much of a focus as it was in all the years before:

  • the shooter Valorant
  • the mobile LoL, Wild Rift
  • the planned LoL MMOPRG
  • or LoL releases like Teamfight Tactics or Rift Rivals
  • All of these projects would drain resources from LoL.

The two bosses emphasize how important League of Legends was, is and always will be for Riot, but indirectly agree with the criticism:

  • For years, LoL had a team that was specifically responsible for developing new game modes
  • But this team was assigned to develop the strategy spin-off “Teamfight Tactics” – which was great for Teamfight Tactics, but not as good for LoL as they admit
  • but now they have a full game mode team ready to deliver
  • New game mode is to put teams of 2 against each other

What is the new game mode? As a solution to the problem that LoL development has recently been seen as somewhat sluggish and formulaic, bosses have identified “new game modes”:

  • A new unusual mode is scheduled to appear in summer 2023 – the first prototype was played a few days ago.
  • In the mode, 4 teams of 2 players fight each other in a series of “Deathmatches”.
  • Between rounds, players should then be able to level up and buy items
  • The mode is still “a bit raw”, but has a lot of potential. More information will be available in March

LoL makes 4 promises for the future

Will LoL get better again? By the end of the video, the bosses are raving about the future of the game. You have now been granted a lot of money, want LoL to flourish over the years, want to invest a lot of money in infrastructure and long-term projects.

There are 4 promises for the future:

  • For 2024, a cinematic is announced again like before
  • Wants to bring better events and modes into the game, it should start already in the summer
  • We want to keep investing in technology
  • In addition, they want to communicate better and be more transparent in the future.
  • Apparently, this “honest and personal” communication had now become necessary because a first apology from Riot Games went completely wrong:
