19 year old Max Dehning did something surprising in February this

The young top thrower in the world statistics was the last man to advance to the EC finals. After the season, a 20th birthday and a surgeon’s knife await.

Finland last had three men’s javelin throwers in the European Championship finals in Zurich 2014, until Oliver Helander, Lassi South house and Tony Corpuscle they succeeded in this on Tuesday in Rome. The trio Etelätalo was part of the final team already 10 years ago.

Before that, this was successful at the European Championships in Munich in 2002. More than two years after that, on September 9, 2004, he was born in Hanover, Germany Max Dehning, who so far has been responsible for the most astonishing performance of the javelin season, even of the athletics season. He is the only thrower over 90 meters in world statistics so far.

19-year-old Dehning also made it to the finals, as the last, i.e. the 12th athlete and with more than a meter to spare.

The result of 80.52 in the windless Olympic Stadium in Rome was very different from what was seen in the Saale-Halle Werferzentrum on February 25, 2024.

In a good downwind, Dehning loaded no less than 90.20 meters long, which still 3.5 months later is the highest number in the world statistics.

Vastly above the basic level

The ex-handball player, who lives in Leverkusen with his 7-player sister, is the number one in the world statistics in the entire spectrum of athletics, who has most violently exceeded his basic level in his top performance. My record was improved in Halle’s inclement weather by an astounding 11.07 meters.

– I was healthier then than now. I have suffered from an adductor injury and pain in the ankle of the supporting leg, says Dehning, who after the season will take care of his adductor.

The tough and strong young man dropped his weight from last season to this season from 121 kilos to around 110 and plans to burn another fifty kilos of lard. Any extra weight drastically increases a power thrower’s risk of injury in the lower body area.

Helander studied the video

– That throw in February looked really good to me and I don’t just put it down to the circumstances. Now Max’s throwing hasn’t looked as good technically, says OIiver Helander, who has watched the video of the 90.20 meter throw many times, whose record Dehning beat in Halle by 37 cents.

In the actual outdoor track season, Dehning has returned to being a regular mortal, although he has thrown between 80.30-81.78 in all six of his competitions, i.e. still comfortably above his record level from last season.

– Of course, my record throw in February raised the expectations of outsiders and the media to a whole new level. I myself have been my coach (Matthias Rau) with his feet on the ground, Dehning, who secured both the EC and practically also Olympic representation with his record hat, told Urheilu.

– I just have to participate in the German championships. Ignoring Paris would require three pitchers to pass me by with really hard scores.

Dynasty history

This is not the case, because Germany’s spear dynasty of some years ago is history in the big picture. Thomas Röhler the career drags its last, John Weather still suffering from injuries, as well Andreas Hofmann. European champion Julian Weber and young Dehning are currently the only standard-bearers of the traditional sport.

Sometimes it is not good for a young athlete to have an individual performance that goes beyond the basic level to mix a sense of realism and everyday work.

– In spite of everything, I have seen that February’s result has only brought me and my career good things, of which the Olympic place is of course the most important.

A look at the world statistics reveals the proportions of Dehning’s, so far, one-shot wonder. Left behind in the all-time world statistics were e.g. the two previous Olympic champions viz Keshorn Walcott and Neeraj ChopraWorld Cup runner-up in Budapest Arshad NadeemJulian Weber and Antti Ruuskanen. The Finnish throwers were ahead Aki Swarm girl, Tero Pitkämäki and Blacksmith A rag.

It tells about Germany’s level and history that Dehning threw 6th of all time in the German indoor games.
