The Terminator series has existed for almost 40 years and has produced iconic images, stars and characters. The world would be different if Arnold Schwarzenegger hadn’t hunted down Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor as a killer robot in 1984. In 2019, Terminator: Dark Fate, the last part of the series for the time being, was released in cinemas – and possibly gave the franchise that deathblow. Today you can see the film on TV. We look at its potential impact.

When will Terminator: Dark Fate be on TV?

  • Sunday 8:15 p.m. on ProSieben
  • The repeat will follow at 1 a.m. at night
  • What is Terminator: Dark Fate about?

27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) returns to protect Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes). A liquid metal Terminator, the Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna), was sent from the future to end Dani’s life.

The opponent appears overpowered. But Sarah gathers a team of agents and friends like the mysterious cyborg fighter Grace (Mackenzie Davis) to stop the killing machine. Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the T-800 to save the future.

Dark Fate flopped: does Terminator still have a future?

James Cameron, who directed the acclaimed first two parts, had high hopes for Dark Fate. He was disappointed, as were many fans of the series. Dark Fate is the only Terminator film to receive a rating below 6:5.8 on Moviepilot. The expensive project ($185 million budget) only brought in $261 million again and failed across the board.

Dark Fate could have reversed a downward trend in the Terminator series, instead it continued it: four parts have been released since the masterpiece Terminator 2 and the ratings have steadily dropped. The indictment: Since Terminator 2, the once-glamorous franchise hasn’t produced an unqualifiedly good, let alone outstanding, film. Few franchises survive that. No wonder no one is currently working on new Terminator films.

The sci-fi franchise is either facing a very, very long hiatus or its end. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently confirmed his final exit: He was “through” with the franchise. That in turn could be the only chance: A complete restart, without any Arnie legacy.
