Rescue workers try to extricate 18 people trapped in a gold mine in the Xinjiang region of China.
A total of 40 people were in the mine when it collapsed on Saturday. This is now reported by state media.
“A rescue operation is underway to retrieve the remaining miners,” the New China news agency states.
Safety at China’s mines has improved in recent years and there are more reports of the major accidents that occur. But lack of security is still common.
