In March, John Wick: Chapter 4 hit theaters, starring Keanu Reeves at his best. The action hit has grossed over $430 million at the global box office to date, making it the most successful part of the series might. A remarkable growth and testament to Reeves’ star power.
Ten years ago, however, the world looked very different when 47 Ronin hit theaters. The Reeves-led fantasy blockbuster turned out to be a million dollar grave. With a budget of 175 million US dollars (some estimates even go as high as 225 million US dollars), the film only grossed 152 million US dollars.
After the bitter fantasy flop 47, John Wick had to save Keanu Reeves’ career
The 47 Ronin flop came to worst possible timing for Reeves. After great success in the 1990s and early 2000s, his career was faltering in the early 2010s. Was Reeves still a Hollywood star who lured the masses to the cinema? 47 Ronin could have been a really nasty career killer.

A year later, however, Reeves should change tack – with John Wick. As generic and interchangeable as the project seemed at first glance, in the end the contract killer film was not the only thing that urgently needed Reeves’ career necessary upswing brought, but completely changed the current action cinema.
“Action John Wick Style” is one of the sentences that every Hollywood studio wants to hear right now. Meanwhile, Reeves doesn’t have to worry about new movies. With Bill & Ted saving the universe and he even has Matrix Resurrections two of his most iconic roles to revive. However, nothing can match the John Wick success.
