With Judge Dredd, the first film adaptation of the cult comic series of the same name was released in 1995. Sylvester Stallone is on board as the main actor, who completes the sci-fi action spectacle with silly one-liners trash grenade power.
You can watch the first Judge Dredd film on RTL II today at 8:15 p.m. But it’s worth a lot more remake from 2012.
The newer Dredd is a brilliant firework of action
Pete Travis’ Dredd remake is also about a dystopian future in which super police officers, so-called judges, act as… executioner and judge work. In the 2012 version, the young policewoman Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) and her mentor Judge Dredd (The Boys and Lord of the Rings star Karl Urban) have to storm a skyscraper in which a dangerous drug gang has holed up.

In contrast to the trashier Sylvester Stallone film, the new Dredd is based on overstylized action. With slow-motion sequences designed to evoke the effect of the drug used in the plot, the result is incredibly haunting images of beauty and brutality.
Unfortunately, the film’s distinctive style didn’t help Dredd at the box office. With a budget of 30 to 45 million dollars, the action hit only grossed 41 million dollars and is there flopped. The Stallone version didn’t fare much better, though. The 90s Dredd also flopped back then and only then became cult trash fun.
