17-year-old takes on the toughest e-sports job in the world

Faker is an absolute legend in League of Legends. But now the professional has injured his hand. Yoon “Poby” Sung-won, who is only 17, has temporarily replaced him. In his first match as a pro, he had to play against a direct competitor in the race for the playoffs and had a difficult time.

What’s happening at T1?

  • Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok is an absolute legend. He has been playing for Team T1 since 2013, has been world champion three times, won the Mid-Season Invitational and won several league titles.
  • But the professional is currently struggling with a hand injury. This is apparently so serious that he has to temporarily suspend (via Twitter).
  • His replacement comes from within the ranks of T1’s Challenger team. However, Poby is not a regular in the midlane there, but has only played two matches in the summer split. They won one and lost one.
  • As a relatively inexperienced player, Poby had to follow in Faker’s footsteps. To make matters worse, the summer season has not been ideal for T1 so far. While they were first in the spring with 17 wins and only one loss, before the match they were only third with a score of 6-2.

Poby is a great talent but the pressure was too much

How did the game go for Poby? At the beginning he did well in the midlane, even leading in the minion kills. However, things were mixed on the side lanes and DRX temporarily took the lead with 8:0 kills. Poby secured the first kill for T1 in a teamfight, but then died himself.

The whole team seemed unstable and uncoordinated. It may have lacked Faker’s calls and roaming potential.

Match 2 also started promisingly with a first blood for T1 and a CS lead for Poby. However, after a losing team fight midway through, T1 lost control. In the end the series won 2-0 and Poby finished the second match on Annie with 0 kills and 4 deaths.

What’s next? T1 has to play against the first placed Gen.G on Saturday. They haven’t lost a single match in the Summer Split. It is currently unclear whether Faker can play again or whether Poby will be used again. A statement on this is expected tomorrow.

T1 was able to defend third place despite the defeat, but it’s getting closer. With another defeat, they could slip down to 5th place and end the “first half of the season” there. To qualify for the playoffs, they must finish 6th or higher.

The “second half of the season” then starts on July 14th. T1 has to play against NongShim REDFORCE, who is currently bottom of the table.

What does Poby’s future hold? Poby is considered a huge talent and is being considered by some to be Faker’s long-term successor. He couldn’t access the potential at his first appearance in the LCK.

But he will certainly have a chance to prove himself in the second team.

However, the T1 Academy Team is currently in last place in the Challenger League. The 21-year-old Lee “Nice” Chan-hyeok is currently set there as a midlaner. Poby could perhaps oust this in the coming months.
