The forest fires raging on the Greek island of Rhodes are not letting up – the village of Lardos, where around hundreds of Swedes are on holiday, is to be evacuated, something that DN was the first to report on.
– Our personnel on site say that there is troublesome smoke in the air and there is a large readiness of police, firefighters and medical personnel on site, says Martina Krantz, press officer at Apollo.
The fires have moved closer to the village of Lardos on the eastern side of Rhodes and travelers are already being affected by the smoke. There are no reports of personal injuries.
At least a couple of hundred people are said to have received text messages about evacuation from the travel companies, but due to poor mobile coverage in the area, it is not certain that everyone was reached by the message. Travel company Apollo has also contacted the hotels with information.
– We coordinate transport from there and arrange accommodation elsewhere on Rhodes, says Martina Krantz, press officer at Apollo.
TUI will evacuate around 80 guests in the resort of Kiotari near Lindos. Ving, which has an unknown number of travelers in the affected area, must also evacuate the people who traveled with the company.
– The wind has changed direction, which creates some problems, says Adam Györki at TUI to TT.
