Several hundred firefighters are battling a major fire in Aragon in northern Spain.

Over 1,500 people have been forced to evacuate after the fire during the night to Sunday grew strongly. The worst is the situation around the village of Añon de Moncayo, west of Zaragoza. There, rescue workers struggle to keep the flames away from residential buildings.

Strong winds make firefighting more difficult and the authorities fear that the fire will spread further. During Sunday evening, 8,000 hectares were estimated to have been ravaged by fire.

Spain has been hit by over 330 fires this year alone, fires that have destroyed over 260,000 hectares and the country is the worst affected of all European countries.
