At least 150 people have died in violence in the Caribbean capital of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, during the week, the United Nations says.
– The latest wave of violence in Haiti’s capital indicates that worse is to come. Gang violence must be stopped. Haiti must not be allowed to sink deeper into chaos, UN human rights commissioner Volker Türk says.
Gang violence and clashes with police forces have led to the aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announcing earlier today that it will suspend its operations in Port-au-Prince.
According to MSF, its workers were attacked and two police officers under their care were killed. Reported about it including the BBC.
Haiti has been in the grip of widespread chaos caused by gang criminals for years. During the current year, Kenyan peacekeepers have arrived in the country and a new interim administration has been formed, but so far the authorities have not succeeded in curbing the violence.
