This week, all eyes will be on New York, with more than 150 leaders due to speak in a world in crisis, shaken by the war in Ukraine in particular. A summit on education will be held first, this Monday, September 19, and from Tuesday the heads of state and government will follow one another on the UN platform.

This General Assembly first marks the return to face-to-face meetings for the Heads of State, Heads of Government and Ministers who will speak. For the past two years, due to Covid-19, some of the speeches had been made in the form of recorded videos.
There will still be an intervention recorded this year: that of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, authorized by special vote. Russia unsurprisingly was against it.
Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping absent
Its president Vladimir Putin, like his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will be the main absentees of the week. Obviously for them the real rendezvous was last week the Samarkand summit which brought together several countries hostile to the United States.

In fact, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres denounced a few days before the General Assembly the geostrategic divisions ” which have never been so important since at least the cold war “, he called to himself” bring together to find solutions to dramatic challenges “.
Ukraine, energy and climate crisis
Among the challenges that the world’s leaders will tackle, there is of course the war in Ukraine. A meeting of the Security Council is scheduled for Thursday, while some countries in the South are annoyed that Westerners are concentrating, according to them, all their attention on this conflict.
Other challenges: the Covid-19 health crisis, the energy crisis threatening Europe, and climate change, two months before COP 27 in Egypt and while floods are drowning a third of Pakistan. On Wednesday, a round table is scheduled on the subject. Also to follow the ECOWAS summit on the sidelines of the General Assembly, we will talk about Mali and its showdown with Côte d’Ivoire.
Antonio Guterres maintained his education summit this Monday, September 19, but there will be fewer leaders than expected because of the Queen’s funeral on the other side of the Atlantic.
