Processionary caterpillars are insects that move in single file, in a procession, hence their name. You will easily recognize them if you come across them. Their very stinging hairs can be dangerous for humans, but also for domestic animals. In France, there are two species, pine processionary caterpillars (Thaumetopea pityocampa D.&S.) and oak processionary caterpillars (Thaumetopea processionea L.). Be careful if you come across one, not to approach it.
