15-inch laptops: the best models

15 inch laptops the best models

Although increasingly challenged by smaller models, especially 14-inch laptops, 15-inch laptops are still well represented in the market. It must be said that they offer an excellent compromise between size, weight, functions, comfort and performance, to the point that they can be used daily as a main computer without any problem.

Small precision before examining other criteria: the generic term 15 inches corresponds to a family of portable computers and more precisely to the diagonal of their screen, generally 15.6 inches (that is to say approximately 40 cm). So don’t be surprised to find a few variations here and there.

The size of the screen has a direct impact on the definition of the image And if rare entry-level models are still satisfied with the so-called HD definition (i.e. 1366 by 766 pixels), many have a Full screen HD (1920 by 1080 pixels), much better suited for playing videos. Some go further, but the best is sometimes the enemy of the good, unless you have very good eyesight, there is little benefit in seeing text and tiny icons… On the other hand, the image quality, which does not depend on the definition, is much more important. Contrast, brightness, respect for colors, reflections and viewing angles: everything comes into play. And the differences are sometimes huge!

Unfortunately, they are impossible to detect on simple technical characteristics, failing to be able to carry out an in situ test, it is necessary to rely on serious tests or user opinions. Note, however, that many experts prefer IPS-type screens to TN panels, which are considered less pleasant. Pay attention to the maximum brightness, which is sometimes too low: at less than 250 or 300 cd/m2 (or nits), it is difficult to watch the screen comfortably in a bright environment.

In terms of comfort, most 15-inch laptops have a full keyboard with numeric keypad. An advantage over smaller models which generally do not have it, especially when you regularly type numbers. The quality of the keyboard should not however be neglected: the typing must remain pleasant and precise, which is not always the case, with misplaced keys, too close or facetious, which generate faults. Again, only a life-size test can get an idea.

The performance aspect is obviously important. But it depends above all on the choice and balance of the installed components. Thus, there is no point in having a powerful processor if it cannot count on a good amount of RAM. If entry-level processors (Intel Celeron or Pentium, AMD 3000) are sufficient for basic use (office automation, Internet, video playback, etc.), it is better to rely on more efficient models to gain fluidity in intensive use, such as the Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 or the AMD Ryzen 3, 5 and 7. Note that the brand new Ryzen 5xxx series easily compares to Intel’s 11th and 12th Gen chips for, in most cases, a cost lower.

If you plan to play, beware: most models are equipped with a standard graphics circuit (Intel or AMD), sufficient for conventional use, but not for video games. It is better to turn to a computer stamped “gamer”, equipped with a more efficient specialized chip, often Nvidia brand, with a dedicated memory of a substantial size.

For RAM, the minimum is now 4 GB, but it is better to favor 8 GB for intensive use, with several applications open at the same time. And be able to go up to 16 GB for professional use, or for work on image or sound (audio, photo or video). On the storage side, the classic hard drive is gradually giving way to the SSD – electronic memory storage system – much faster, which makes the computer much more responsive in all its uses. 128 GB of SSD is enough for office automation, but it is better to opt for 256 or 512 GB for intensive use. The ideal is to also have a large capacity hard drive (1 or 2 TB) to store less used files. Or a vacant M.2 type slot to add an SSD of this same format later.

Another point of differentiation with the 14 inches: the number and type of interfaces available which is very important. Generally speaking, the more USB sockets the better, because you often need to plug in a mouse, USB key, external drive or other accessories. Prefer USB 3 (3.2 in reality) standard sockets for storage devices, as they offer a higher speed than the old USB 2, which is still very widespread. The best is to have at least one USB Type-C format socket which allows you to connect several peripherals via small hubs, or even to power the computer in some cases.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are not to be neglected to be able to communicate wirelessly. Prefer 802.11ax to 802.11ac because it provides better throughput. And Bluetooth 5 to Bluetooth 4. An Ethernet port (RJ-45 socket) is always useful for connecting to a wired network. Here again, favor the Gigabit interface (1000 Mbit/s) which offers better throughput than Fast Ethernet, limited to 100 Mbit/s.

On the audio and video side, all current laptops have at least a combined mini-jack socket for connecting a microphone and headphones, an HDMI output for connecting an external monitor, a video projector or a television, built-in speakers and a webcam. Watch out for the latter, because it is sometimes of poor quality which affects audio and video conversations.

Question autonomy, the range is very wide, ranging from two or three hours to more than ten hours. Difficult to judge by relying solely on the promises of manufacturers, often optimistic. And this criterion is only really important in a mobile situation, when you don’t have a power outlet to connect the computer to the mains.

There remains the quality of manufacture and the reliability which results from it. On this point, the “all-plastic” models are obviously more fragile than those with metal frames, which are obviously more expensive. Some even break up fairly quickly, while others last for years without flinching.

Finally, note that more and more consumer PCs are sold with Windows 11. Version 10 remains but the migration is easy to do and normally offered just after turning on the machine for the first time. Don’t be put off by the mention of an “S version” of Windows 10. Admittedly, it is special: originally designed for the world of education, it has the advantage, according to Microsoft, of being safer and more efficient. And for good reason: it imposes the use of the home browser Edge and only authorizes the installation of applications from the Microsoft Store, which considerably limits its possibilities… Good news, it is fortunately possible to switch to a standard version of Windows for free 10 then migrate to 11, via the settings. But the operation is irreversible.
