146 people have already died in Ethiopia’s mudslides | News in brief

At least 146 people have died in mudslides caused by heavy rains in the southern parts of Ethiopia, local authorities say.

The mudslides occurred on Monday and Sunday in the remote Kencho Shacha Gozd district.

Among the victims are young children and pregnant women, says the local administrator Dagmawi Ayele.

According to Ayele, at least five people have been rescued from mudslides.

Mudslides are common in Ethiopia during the rainy season, which started in July.
