The head of the tenant association Erik Elmgren has visited Kiruna and Gällivare, two places with similar problems in the housing market.
There is a major housing shortage, but it is difficult to get the construction of new tenements started.
In both locations, the municipal housing companies have had to cancel construction projects due to too few and too high tenders – and competition between the construction companies has been non-existent.
Had they not gone ahead with the projects, the rents would have skyrocketed.
The tenants’ association’s proposal
Erik Elmgren believes that one solution to the problem is to reintroduce the investment support that existed in the years 2016-2021. The ore fields had the highest level of support.
– It provided Sweden with 58,000 apartments during those years, he says.
In comparison, a support of 140 million next year and a total of 1.53 billion until 2028 would not give as much, he believes.
– It is a good initiative, but it is too late and too little. What is 140 million enough for? Maybe 70-100 apartments, says Erik Elmgren.
