Through master director Sergio Leone’s Dollar trilogy, Clint Eastwood became an immortal Western legend. He played one in it silent gunslingerswho is responsible for some of the genre’s most iconic images. However, it is not the only defining Western role in Eastwood’s filmography.
In 1976 Eastwood conquered as Outlaw Josey Wales the big screen – in a film that he also directed: The Texan. The film adaptation of Forrest Carter’s novel Gone to Texas features an extremely dark story and questions the often romanticized images of its genre.

The plot of The Texan is set during the American Civil War and initially shows us an idyll: Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood) lives a peaceful life with his family. As his farm however attacked by irregular soldiers from the northern states this idyll turns into a nightmare.

Between war film and revenge thriller, The Texan exposes the myths of the romanticized Western images of the 1940s and 1950s. Eastwood brings with him much of the dirty spirit of the Spaghetti Western that he previously explored extensively in the Dollar Trilogy. The result is a relentless ride straight into the abyss.
