According to the interior minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there was an escape attempt at Makala Central Prison on Monday that ended in blood.

At least 129 people have died in an attempted prisoner escape in the central African Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country’s interior minister Jacquemain Shabani says in the X message service.

According to Interior Minister Shabani, inmates of Makala Central Prison tried to escape from the prison on Monday. After the warnings, the authorities opened fire on the escaping prisoners. 24 prisoners were shot dead.

According to Shabani, the rest of the more than a hundred dead suffocated or were left at people’s feet in the chaos.

In addition, 59 people were injured and two women were raped, Shabani says.

Material damage is also extensive: the administration building, the infirmary and the prison’s food storage were destroyed in the fire that broke out in the situation.

Shabani presents her condolences to the families of the dead and says that the country’s security authorities are meeting in a crisis meeting because of what happened.
