About half of those injured needed hospital treatment. According to the Jordanian Ministry of Health, there are only a few people left on treatment on Tuesday.

At least 12 people were killed and 251 injured in a chlorine gas leak in the port of Aqaba on Monday in Jordan.

According to local authorities, a tank filled with 25 tonnes of liquid chlorine was being lifted onto the ship. The tank fell during transport. Authorities said the steel rope carrying the tank had failed.

A video released by state television shows how the tank falls off the winch and hits the deck of the ship. Dock workers fled a yellow cloud of poison.

The force of the explosion also pushed the adjacent truck into motion.

Traffic in the port now continues as normal

A total of almost 20 containers of liquefied chlorine gas were to be loaded on board.

Nearby areas were evacuated and residents were told to stay indoors. On Tuesday, the country’s health ministry said there were only a few people left in hospital.

Chlorine is a common disinfectant and water purifier. However, inhalation of very high levels of chlorine can cause internal burns and suffocation.

Work was suspended at the grain silos at the port of Aqaba and the grains were inspected for possible contamination. According to the authorities, traffic in the port is now continuing normally.

The port of Aqaba is located in the northern part of the Red Sea. It has long been the main transit route for Iraqi imports and exports.
