5:10 p.m.: Fire in Utrecht apartment block possibly ignited, causing tens of thousands of euros in damage
The fire that raged last night in a porch apartment on Rooseveltlaan in the Kanaleneiland district of Utrecht may have been ignited. The police are investigating the fire and are considering arson. The fire started at 2:15 am last night and spread quickly.
4.20 pm: Several cars damaged in an accident in Nieuwegein
Several cars collided with each other in Nieuwegein. The accident happened around 2.20 pm on the Plettenburgerbaan. Five vehicles were damaged and were removed by a recovery company.
One person was treated by ambulance personnel at the scene of the accident and taken to hospital, a police spokesperson said. The road was closed due to the accident, but has now reopened.
3.48pm: Explosive material detonated
The explosive material that was found last night in a garage in Baarn was detonated. The police received a report yesterday about the car, which was parked under suspicious circumstances in a garage on the Brinkendael. The car’s windshield was broken and the license plate was missing. Later, officers saw explosive material in the garage.
The EOD determined that it was actually explosive material and made it safe. The material was detonated in a controlled manner at the Leusderheide, the police reported.
The car may have been in the garage since Tuesday. The police are investigating who owned the car and the explosive material and are calling on witnesses to come forward.
2.19 pm: Explosion at a healthcare institution in Montfoort
An explosive went off last night at the De Wijde Wereld care institution for children aged 4 to 12 in Montfoort. The police assume it was intentional. No one was injured.
Several children were staying in the institution during the explosion. The shock and damage are great, the police say.
12.15 pm: Disruption on the railway between Utrecht and Amsterdam
An overhead line near Amsterdam Duivendrecht broke this morning over a stretch of approximately 600 meters. A train was also damaged, rail manager ProRail reports. Due to the damaged overhead line, fewer trains are running between Utrecht and Amsterdam Central Station.
According to ProRail, the problems arose just after 6 a.m. The cause is not known. ProRail hopes that the train service can run normally again on Saturday. Until then, travelers are advised to use a travel planner.
10.04 am: 22 fines at fat bike and moped inspection in Houten
During a fat bike and moped check in Houten, the police issued 22 fines. The inspection took place at Het Rond, Castellum and De Kruisboog. “A fine for driving a souped-up fat bike can quickly amount to 300 euros,” the police say.
Ten fines were issued for driving with a mobile phone in hand, and three fines for driving a fat bike that is not permitted on public roads. Three fines were also given for driving with malfunctioning brakes. A driver also received a fine for riding a moped with a maximum speed of more than 100 kilometers per hour.
One fat bike was seized. This driver had previously received a warning for riding a souped-up fat bike. The traffic officer will decide whether the driver will get the vehicle back.
7.47 am: Single-vehicle accident in Amersfoort
A single-vehicle accident occurred on the Kruiskamp ring road in Amersfoort around 12:15 am. The driver had to be taken to hospital, a press photographer said.
The rear of the car sustained damage. A recovery company has been called in to tow the vehicle. The cause of the accident is unknown.
7.39 am: Short fire in Utrecht apartment
A fire broke out in a porch apartment in the Utrecht district of Kanaleneiland last night around 2:15 am. Five residents of Rooseveltlaan were taken to hospital because they had smoke inhalation. A number of others were checked on the spot.
7.31 am: Dozens of fines after traffic control in Utrecht
Dozens of violations were found during a traffic check on the Road to Science in Utrecht last night. The police and municipal enforcement officers checked traffic safety on Wednesday afternoon and evening. 39 cyclists rode without lights, 28 people used their telephone while cycling and 15 moped riders unlawfully used cycle paths. A cyclist also drove through a red light and a moped rider was not wearing a helmet. All violators have been fined
With the dark days approaching, the police warn road users to put their lighting in order and stay alert in traffic. “Take care of your own safety and that of others,” is the advice.
