5:10 p.m.: Fire in Utrecht apartment block possibly ignited, causing tens of thousands of euros in damage

The fire that raged last night in a porch apartment on Rooseveltlaan in the Kanaleneiland district of Utrecht may have been ignited. The police are investigating the fire and are considering arson. The fire started at 2:15 am last night and spread quickly.

4.20 pm: Several cars damaged in an accident in Nieuwegein

Several cars collided with each other in Nieuwegein. The accident happened around 2.20 pm on the Plettenburgerbaan. Five vehicles were damaged and were removed by a recovery company.

One person was treated by ambulance personnel at the scene of the accident and taken to hospital, a police spokesperson said. The road was closed due to the accident, but has now reopened.

12.15 pm: Disruption on the railway between Utrecht and Amsterdam

An overhead line near Amsterdam Duivendrecht broke this morning over a stretch of approximately 600 meters. A train was also damaged, rail manager ProRail reports. Due to the damaged overhead line, fewer trains are running between Utrecht and Amsterdam Central Station.

According to ProRail, the problems arose just after 6 a.m. The cause is not known. ProRail hopes that the train service can run normally again on Saturday. Until then, travelers are advised to use a travel planner.

10.04 am: 22 fines at fat bike and moped inspection in Houten

During a fat bike and moped check in Houten, the police issued 22 fines. The inspection took place at Het Rond, Castellum and De Kruisboog. “A fine for driving a souped-up fat bike can quickly amount to 300 euros,” the police say.

7.31 am: Dozens of fines after traffic control in Utrecht

Dozens of violations were found during a traffic check on the Road to Science in Utrecht last night. The police and municipal enforcement officers checked traffic safety on Wednesday afternoon and evening. 39 cyclists rode without lights, 28 people used their telephone while cycling and 15 moped riders unlawfully used cycle paths. A cyclist also drove through a red light and a moped rider was not wearing a helmet. All violators have been fined
