11-year-old Melwin organizes a wheelchair race for everyone

Melwin Stålhammar from Hörby is passionate about helping others. In the past, he has been involved in collecting over half a million kroner for research. Now he wants to spread joy with a new project – the wheelchair race “Wheels for Feels”.

Skånian Melwin Stålhammar sits in a wheelchair. Both he and his little sister have the unusual muscle disease SMA, spinal muscular atrophy. It causes the muscles in the legs to become severely weakened. In the wheelchair race that will take place in May, everyone who drives a wheelchair or walker can participate.

Everyone in a wheelchair and with a walker should get a chance to do something fun, which other pedestrians should also be able to do, he says.

The competition will have two courses of different lengths, one of 1 kilometer and one of 1.8 kilometers. It will also be divided into two rounds, one for manual wheelchair and one for power wheelchair and walker. Several people have already registered for the competition.

I’m hoping for 50, but right now there are 13 registered and that’s great, he says.

Has received a very positive response

It is not the first time that Melwin has done something nice for others. He and his family have previously organized three charity galas to raise money for research. They have also recorded a song where all proceeds went to the fundraiser. In total, they have collected half a million kroner.

Melwin says that he received a very positive response to the wheelchair race. However, he emphasizes that it is not the competition itself that is important.

Everyone who participates will get a medal, it’s not about coming first – but about having fun, says Melwin Stålhammar.
