Who would have thought that fifth spin off of the horror film series The Conjuring the best is? I certainly don’t. With Annabelle 3 you can laugh and be terrified at the same time without any prior knowledge of Annabelle.

Expert Review: Episode 1 – Ghosts (with Conjuring, Supernatural and more)
First of all: Annabelle 3 is not a horror comedy. You will certainly get a lot of creeps, but the shocks will always come with the delightfully light and endearing tone of the film relaxed.
Moviepilot horror expert Max Wieseler put it very aptly in his Annabelle 3 review:
Annabelle 3 is the funniest Conjuring movie. (…) [Er] feels like a wild ghost train ride full of eerie attractions in the best sense of the word, which mutates into an escalating jump scare party towards the end.
That’s what it’s about: In Annabelle 3, Conjuring ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren (again, beautifully played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) act only as a framework. They lock the cursed horror doll Annabelle away at their home. Stupidly, they then drive away and the girlfriend of the babysitter releases the demon.
Director Gary Dauberman himself isn’t a fan of horror comedy, but he wants to bring more fun into his horror movies, he tells Cinemablend. With his first directing project, the Conjuring regular writer brings a newly gained lightness and a lot of self-mockery with the franchise. He wants to make people laugh only to scare them immediately afterwards.
And if that doesn’t convince you: there are encounters with Werewolves in chicken coops.
You don’t need any previous knowledge of the Conjuring for Annabelle 3
The sometimes hilarious entertainment is the romantic-dark tone of the main films Conjuring – The Visitation and especially Conjuring 2 and the generic horror of all other spin-offs. It can’t hurt to have seen the other movies to fully understand and enjoy Annabelle 3, but you don’t need them.

Much more than a franchise entry, Annabelle Comes Home, as it was originally titled, is a independent and sometimes even touching teen horror fun with well-written characters. The Warrens’ daughter, the two teenage girls who take care of her and a lovestruck friend will take you to her heart in no time.
However, if you are interested in the Conjuring story, then you must read Annabelle 3 (set in 1971/72). right after Conjuring (1971) and before Llorona’s Curse (1973). Except for The Conjuring 2, all of the other spin-offs in the series play before Annabelle 3.
Also, the Annabelle sequel begins by taking us back to the iconic opening scene from the very first Conjuring film starring Ed and Lorraine.
According to the creators, Annabelle 3 is at night in the museum with horror dolls
Conjuring director and Annabelle 3 producer James Wan compared his horror film to EW before it was finished Ben Stiller comedy:
Annabelle activates all of the other cursed items in the room. So it’s actually Nights at the Museum, just with Annabelle.
In Nights at the Museum, Ben Stiller has to help out as a museum attendant living exhibits bang around. Here no dark horror demons come to life in the ghost hunting cabinet, but a dinosaur skeleton and Theodore Roosevelt made of wax.
If Nights in the Museum packs a good dose of horror, then you’re not as far away from Annabelle 3 as you might think.
