A 101-year-old Nazi guard has been sentenced to five years in prison for his part in the murders of more than 3,000 people in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, between 1942 and 1945.

According to the charges against the man, who was 21 in 1942, he is said to have assisted in arquebusing Soviet prisoners of war and murdering other prisoners with the poison gas Zyklon B.

The second the verdict was handed down, the 101-year-old became the oldest person to be convicted of involvement in war crimes during the Holocaust.
