100 days of war – no de-escalation in sight: ‘Very dark’

Doaa Abu Lashin kisses her daughter, Zeinab, on the forehead. The small body is covered by a white veil.

She is one of more than ten civilians reportedly killed in an attack on buildings in the Gaza city of Rafah on Saturday. There were two families in the house, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health.

– They died in their home, where they thought they were safe, while they were having dinner. Where is the International Criminal Court when our children are murdered? says Bassem Arefeh who lost several relatives in the attack.

Netanyahu: “No one can stop us”

The war between Israel and Hamas is the deadliest since the establishment of the state of Israel. Over 23,000 Palestinians and 1,300 Israelis are reported to have been killed since the October 7 Hamas attack and there is no sign of a let-up.

– No one can stop us. Not The Hague, not the Axis powers and no one else, Netanyahu said in a televised speech on Saturday.

Over 100 Israeli hostages

At the same time, demonstrations are taking place in the streets of Tel Aviv to bring home the around 130 Israelis who are still being held hostage by the terrorist group Hamas. Many want to see negotiations with Hamas, while Netanyahu sticks to his militant approach to the terror group. The Prime Minister is now suffering from plummeting public opinion figures.

– Many are critical and believe that Israel’s strategy is not working. They are far from their goal of eliminating Hamas. Meanwhile, Netanyahu says he will continue. Right now it looks very dark, says SVT’s Middle East correspondent Samir Abu Eid.

80 percent on the run in Gaza

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is described as catastrophic. A quarter of the population is at risk of starvation and 80 percent of the population is now on the run.

– For over 100 days, the Gaza Strip has been bombed and in the last 24 hours alone, 135 people were killed. Most of the dead are women and children, so innocent people, says Samir Abu Eid.

During Sunday, several demonstrations are expected around the world to demand a ceasefire in the war – something that Benjamin Netanyahu has so far refused to do.
