It has been clear since September 2023 that Bethesda is working on a new edition of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Now there is supposed insider information about the release period and the gameplay improvements.
Where does the new information come from? In their latest report, those responsible at mp1st.com refer to the (unlinked) website of a former Virtuos employee who is said to have worked on the new edition of Oblivion from 2023 to 2024.
There the developer apparently reveals details about the remaster project, which we have known about since September 2023. During the court hearing between the FTC and Microsoft over the takeover of Activision Blizzard, documents were published confirming work on a remake of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is one of the best role-playing games of all time:
More than just a remaster
What does the alleged leak reveal? Apparently fans of Elder Scrolls IV can expect much more than just a technical modernization (as is usual with pure remastered editions). Oblivion is set to be “completely redesigned” with Unreal Engine 5.
In particular, six gameplay areas of the role-playing game from 2006 are said to have been revised: the endurance system, sneaking, blocking, archery, hit feedback and the interface.
The new blocking system is intended to be based on From Software’s Souls titles, for example, in order to deliver a more exciting and less frustrating gaming experience. Overall, the new edition should feel more modern, more understandable and more appealing.
According to the well-connected and reliable industry insider “Nate the Hate”, a launch of the new edition could be planned for June 2025 (via YouTube). Official details could be available on January 23, 2025, when Microsoft invites you to the next “Developer Direct” for the Xbox cosmos. A new game will be announced there (via news.xbox.com).
What do I need to know about Oblivion? The fourth part of the popular Elder Scrolls series was released for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 and secured average ratings of 93 and 94 respectively (via metacritic.com). The user score there is 8.5.
On Steam, however, 95 percent of the over 38,000 reviews are positive. For many genre fans, Oblivion is one of the best role-playing games of all time. In some Elder Scrolls rankings, the fourth part even appears in first place, ahead of Morrowind and Skyrim. As of November 2011, the game is said to have sold more than 3.5 million copies. Unfortunately, there are no current figures.
Oblivion continues to delight today with its huge, open world, enormous gameplay freedom and sandbox gaming experience that is typical of the Elder Scrolls series. But Oblivion has also earned a reputation for changing the entire industry with one small thing: an infamous DLC from Bethesda earned the company millions and caused a major change in gaming
