Why is the government pulling out the wallet for Utrecht?
Those millions from the government were not just released for public transport in Utrecht. Nieuwegein alderman Ellie Eggengoor thinks that there are roughly two reasons that convinced the government. On the one hand: build, build, build. “If public transport improves, we can build many more homes. That will help to partly solve the national shortage”
On the other hand: everyone (of the municipalities and the province) is on the same page. “All parties involved in our province are clear about this: we just want to be much more accessible in the future. Because we have jointly expressed our great wish, the government understood: without better public transport, Utrecht will be inaccessible in a while. And that is for no one desirable.”
